Christmas City of the High Plains



WaKeeney has held the title of “Christmas City of the High Plains” since 1950.   This holiday wonderland lights up the prairie skies from the Saturday following Thanksgiving till after New Year’s.

Interesting facts about the “Christmas City of the High Plains”

  • Designed and built in the basement of Keraus Hardware Store

  • Designed by Jake Heckman, local banker and artist

  • Built by Art Keraus, local hardware merchant,  a man “who could build anything”

  • Many volunteers donated hundreds of hours to help over the years

  • Centerpiece is a 35-foot tree of fresh pine greenery located in center of downtown    intersection

  • Canopy of heavenly blue lights radiates from four ivory stars that crown the tree

  • Over 6.800 colored lights throughout display

  • Four square block area around the tree decorated with more fresh greenery; handcrafted wreaths, bows and bells; and more lights

  • Consists of 3 miles of electrical wiring, 1400 lbs. fresh greenery and 1100 yards fresh greenery garlands

  • Business district outlined with over 2,000 perimeter lights which remain lit year round

  • Considered largest Christmas display between Kansas City & Denver


This annual event has become a source of pride for the community.   The Christmas Tree is a tribute to the will and cooperation of our local residents    Hundreds of volunteers have worked side by side for over 50 years on a common goal and they have learned about brotherhood – one of the true meanings of Christmas.
