Emanuel Lutheran Church


This historic limestone church is located on the Smoky Valley Scenic Byway, 7.5 miles south of Ogallah, I-70 Exit 135, on KS Hwy 147.

Interesting facts about the Emanuel Lutheran Church:

  • 1902 established by Swedish immigrants

  • Original name – Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Emanuel Church

  • Constructed of native limestone

  • Limestone quarried near Threshing Machine Canyon located along Smoky Hill Trail

  • P.A. Nelson quarried the limestone for church and his nearby home

  • Built by Mr. Hughes

  • Mr. Schutte from Ellis constructed the arches

  • 2002 small but active congregation celebrated its 100th Anniversary

  • Currently member of Prairie Faith Ministry of WaKeeney
