A retired Navy F-14 Tomcat Fighter Jet has been restored and is on display at Eisenhower Park, along I-70 at Exit 127. Former Mayor of WaKeeney, Kenny Deustcher, began searching for items that were representative of each branch of the military to promote the new Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at WaKeeney.

Interesting facts about the F-14 Tomcat Fighter Jet:

  • Required several money-making projects to raise money for transportation costs

  • Spring 2006 jet was dismantled in Ohio & transported to WaKeeney by truck

  • During the transport It’s large size created several challenges

  • 62-ft aircraft weighed 40,000 pounds

  • Wings, tailpiece, & flight controls transported separately & arrived first

  • Fuselage took up almost two lanes on the highways

  • Required special permits from each state that it traveled through

  • Team of 4 retired military men from Virginia rebuilt the jet

  • Rebuilt in downtown parking lot where it was the center of attention

  • Then towed to permanent location in Eisenhower Park

The restored F-14 Fighter Jet serves as a tribute to veterans of all ages and all branches of the military.
