Western Kansas Saloon and Grill


The Western Kansas Saloon & Grill is located in a restored 1925 hardware store in downtown WaKeeney. Their specialties include steaks, seafood, and pasta with delicious handmade desserts.

Interesting Facts about the Western Kansas Saloon & Grill:

  • Former Keraus Hardware Store built by J.J. Keraus and his sons, E.R. (Ed) and A.S. (Art)

  • 1998 building purchased by Larry and Jean Hixson and restored to near original state

  • Features antiques, original freight elevator, pressed –tin ceiling, hardwood floors, balcony, and original skylight

  • Features six large paintings by local artist – Rancher and his Cattle, Pioneer Cabin, Buffalo Herd, Indian Village, Windmill, and Special Bar Scene of Four Local Men

  • Significant event  in basement work rooms — design and construction of WaKeeney Christmas decorations, which are still used today

  • Decorations were also wired for electricity to make the city light up

  • Features an extra-large Christmas tree year round because of its history

  • Most unusual feature – triangle-shaped hole in the floor

  • Used by early day clerks to drop token to the card table in the basement below to warn high-stakes gamblers that the law had just arrived

  • Hole was plugged but is still visible – Check it out!
